An “isolated case” of monkeypox has been confirmed in Alberta, the region’s chief medical officer of health stated Thursday.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw posted on Twitter that the Alberta case had intimate contact with a known issue outside the region.

Hinshaw did not say where in the area the infected personal stays. She said no identifying details about the individual would be released to defend the patient’s privacy.

An “isolated case” of monkeypox has been confirmed in Alberta, the region’s chief medical officer of health stated Thursday

“The person is now self-isolating, and we value their co-operation in working with our group to inform our inquiry and contact tracing,” said Hinshaw. “At this time, the threat of further transmission is low.”

Hinshaw said monkeypox is a rare illness that can cause fevers, aches, and rashes. Hinshaw said that monkeypox is usually considered uncommon and low risk to the public.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, monkeypox commonly spreads from intimate person-to-person contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets, immediate contact with sores or bodily fluids, or contaminated clothing.
