Fort McMurray Giants going back to baseball after two years

Key takeaways:

  • ‘We’re feeling like it’s running to be a much more usual season,’ states league president.
  • Halen Knoll, the pitcher for the Fort McMurray Giants, is training for his second season with the squad.

Back to Baseball:

The Fort McMurray Giants are among seven squads playing collegiate summer baseball for only two years, and trainers, players, and bosses are keen.

The Giants, who play in the Western Canadian Baseball League, hasn’t fielded a squad since 2019, since the 2020 season was revoked and only a handful of teams played in the league the previous year.

Kevin Kvame, president of the Western Canadian Baseball league, stated that seven out of 11 squads didn’t play the prior year.

He said the disappointing earlier year that not all squads could play, but having a few teams out on the field was exemplary.

“We were beginning the way back,” said Kvame.

Ray Brown, head coach of the Giants, stated the team is prepared to play ball.

“We look ahead to seeing the fans up at the stadium, we look on to providing them good quality baseball, and we look along to getting them home a league championship this year.”

He said the team didn’t play the previous year because it didn’t make economic logic to travel all over the region without the earnings from fans and fundraisers.

The first practice is anticipated to be at the end of May.

Halen Knoll, the pitcher for the Fort McMurray Giants, will be playing his second season after signing for them in 2019.

“It’s going to be great,” said Knoll.

He said it was unfortunate that he couldn’t play for Fort McMurray earlier. He sees the summer league as an essential stepping stone in his job, so he’s glad to be playing the sport at a higher level again.
