Lawyers give closing remarks in the case of Ahmaud Arbery’s killing

Lawyers on Monday gave their last words to the jury in the crime of Ahmaud Arbery, with the prosecution stating that three white fellows followed him entirely “because he was a Black man running down the street,” while the defence frequently criticised Arbery for his death. Source – cbc.ca

In closing debates, a defence lawyer for the guy who shot the lethal gunshots stated Arbery, 25, was shot as he strongly opposed a judicial attempt to arrest him to answer questions about robberies in the area.

“It is, horrifically tragic that this has happened,” stated Jason Sheffield, the attorney describing one of them attacked, Travis McMichael. “This is where the law is intertwined with heartache and tragedy. You are allowed to defend yourself.” Source – cbc.ca

The debates opened before a disproportionately white jury after 10 days of declaration that ended last week, not long after the man who killed Arbery claimed that he pulled the trigger in protection. Closing discussions were to continue Tuesday morning.

Arbery’s killing became part of a broader national statement on racial injustice after a graphic video of his death drooled online two months later. 

Although prosecutors did not discuss that racism caused the crime, federal authorities have imposed all three men with hate violations, claiming that they followed and shot Arbery because he was Black.
